The ridiculous 70-foot shot that Steph Curry hit at the end of the third quarter during the Warriors’ game against the Spurs tonight didn’t count. But as it turned out, Golden State didn’t need it. They handed the Spurs their first home loss of the season by recording a 92-86 win and tied the record that Michael Jordan and the Bulls set back in 1995-96 by winning their 72nd game of the 2015-16 NBA season with one game left to play.
As recently as just a few days ago, it didn’t look like the Warriors were going to be able to hit the 73-win mark. They lost to the Timberwolves in overtime last Tuesday night and needed to win the remaining four games on their schedule to beat the Bulls’ longstanding mark. And while that wouldn’t seem like it’d be a problem for the team that started the season by reeling off 24 straight wins, two of the Warriors’ final four games were slated to be against the Spurs, including tonight’s game which came on the road following a tough game last night against the Grizzlies. But Golden State was ultimately able to pull it off thanks to a 37-point performance from Curry.
