‘Captain America’ Is Already the Second Biggest Movie of 2016

It didn’t take long for Captain America: Civil War to assert its dominance as the blockbuster movie of 2016. The Marvel film surpassed $940 million at the global box office this weekend and added another $72.6 million to its domestic total of $296 million, according to Collider. This is despite being released in the U.S. only 10 days ago.

Here’s the rundown of what that massive success means for Civil War so far:

  • It’s now the sixth-highest-grossing superhero movie of all time
  • It boosts Marvel Studios’ box office take above $10 billion over the 13 films the studio has put out over the past nine years since the first Iron Man movie kicked off the Marvel era
  • It’s already the highest-grossing Captain America movie, easily surpassing The Winter Soldier
  • It’s the second highest grossing film of 2016, only about $30 million behind the animated feature Zootopia, although Civil Warshould easily surpass Zootopia over the next week unless something goes terribly wrong

This week’s top five at the domestic box office were rounded out by The Jungle Book, which added $17.7 million to its $311.8 million take in the U.S., Money Monster, which debuted to $15 million, The Darkness, which debuted to $5.1 million, and Mother’s Day, which added $3.2 million.

In big box office news from the exact opposite end of the spectrum, Colin Farrell’s weird, arthouse dramedy The Lobster, about a world where “single people must find mates within 45 days or risk being transformed into animals,” had the best debut of any indie film so far in 2016, according to USA Today.

It’s going to be a tough road for any movie to surpass Civil War at the box office this year, but a few of the movies coming out later in 2016, like X-Men: Apocalypse (May 27), Independence Day Resurgence (June 24),Star Trek Beyond (July 22), Suicide Sqad (Aug. 5), and Rogue One (Dec. 16), might have a shot.
